Stargirl renewed for season 2…on The CW exclusively, not on DC Universe

Stargirl has been a delightful addition to The CW’s lineup of DC superhero shows, at a time when some of them were on their way out. Arrow ended early this year, The Flash is getting long in the tooth, and new show Batwoman had to deal with a crisis when its lead actor, Ruby Rose, opted to leave the title role.

Amid that tumult, Stargirl has been a breath of fresh air, an optimistic superhero show about a starry-eyed young woman, Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) determined to reform the Justice Society of America as the superhero Stargirl. Now, Variety reports that the show has been renewed for a second season, which is good news for all!

Well, almost all. For now, new episodes of the show premiere on DC Universe, a streaming service dedicated to all things DC. But the second season will air its new episodes only on The CW and its associated platforms.

This seems like another alarm bell for DC Universe, since it’s not the first time one of the service’s original shows has appeared elsewhere. The second season of Doom Patrol is available to watch on HBO Max in addition to DC Universe, and episodes of the animated Harley Quinn series will soon be available there, too. Looking at this, it’s no wonder the internet is wary that DC Universe will last much longer.

There still are a lot of comics available to read on DC Universe, but so far as original programming goes, the options are dwindling.

If you ask me, the service always seemed like it was a little too niche to flourish, especially given that it wasn’t available worldwide, and with the umbrella service HBO Max always around the corner. WarnerMedia owns both services, and it’s now looking like there was a lack of coordination on their part.

Of course, the rollout of HBO Max was a minor disaster anyway, with no one sure whether it overlapped or replaced HBO Now or HBO Go, so clearly this isn’t the team to look to for examples on how to do streaming strategy well. We’ll see what happens.
