The Mandalorian director worried her kids would reveal Baby Yoda spoilers

One of the biggest success stories on Disney+ so far is the hugely popular Star Wars spinoff The Mandalorian, the show that brought Baby Yoda into our lives.

Dangerously adorable.

What was especially impressive was that the cast and crew managed to keep a lid on Baby Yoda until the actual show premiered; Disney even held off on making merch, and they live for merch.

And while the cast and crew were sworn to secrecy, there were scares. In the fourth episode, “Sanctuary,” The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Yoda  Mando find refuge in a small community on a forested planet. Baby Yoda is a hit with the local kids, two of whom were played by the son and daughter of director Bryce Dallas Howard.

Speaking on PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing, Howard revealed her worries about the risks that posed. “The thing that was terrifying was the notion of having children on a set, and what was gonna happen with kids seeing Baby,” she said. “All the kids that were on set, I had conversations with each one of them, just about keeping Baby a secret. And they were all just so great. But my kids, every single day when they were going back to school, before school, I would say, ‘Who do we not talk about today?’ And they would be like, ‘Baby!'”

“It was amazing to get to see my kids on a Star Wars set,” Howard concluded. “Just having the time of their life.” They musta been the coolest kids in school.

Howard returned to direct an episode of The Mandalorian season 2. Whether her kids will return as well remains to be seen, but at least this time round she knows that she can trust them with big secrets!

Of course, once he was released on the world, everyone loved Baby Yoda. That included cult acclaimed director Werner Herzog, who played The Client in the series. Talking with The Hollywood Reporter, Herzog had nothing but nice things to say about his costar:

"I’m not really into the Internet, social media and the comments on the Internet. So, of course, it took me by surprise. But what’s wrong with saying something good about Baby Yoda, which is really a phenomenal achievement? It’s wonderfully created and sculpted, and a mechanical device that is a massive achievement for cinema. You can see it with your eyes, and you can touch it.”"

Herzog is pretty impressed by the technology on The Mandalorian in general, talking enthusiastically about StageCraft, which is used to create CG environments with a wraparound LED screen. This gives the actors a better sense of their environment, rather than a typical green screen.

“What The Mandalorian is doing with its technology, it replaces what has been very difficult for actors, cameras and for everything: the green screens,” Herzog said. “But here, with these round horizons, as an actor, you know where you are, and the camera knows and sees the foreign planet on which you are moving. This is a wonderful achievement. It’s cinema where it always has been and where it should be back.”

We can all see Mando and Baby Yoda back in action in The Mandalorian season 2, which is slated to drop on Disney+ in October.
