Netflix is dropping the second season of its oddball superhero drama The Umbrella Academy on July 31, and we have our first look at the world’s most dysfunctional superhero family as they attempt to travel back in time to save the world…again.
Just your normal family vacation. Check it out!
Starring Ellen Page (Vanya), Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Aidan Gallagher (Number Five) and Justin H. Min (Ben), The Umbrella Academy follows a group of adopted children with super powers as they try and save the world from their own screw ups. When last we saw our intrepid heroes, Vanya had accidentally destroyed the moon in a rage-filled orchestra performance, and Number Five had transported them all to the past in order to mitigate the damage.
Judging by the trailer, however, we’re guessing things don’t go exactly as planned. Unless a supervillain with a goldfish for a head is the plan.
Based on the comics by Gerard Way (who’s the lead singer of My Chemical Romance, FYI), season 2 is set largely in the 1960s in Dallas, Texas. Of course, with a time traveler like Five on the team, who knows how long we’ll stay in that era?
Personally, I’d love to watch Five, Vanya and all the rest screw things up even more each season; who needs another Endgame-like climax where the day is won in the end? And The Umbrella Academy has already shown a willingness to get pretty weird and different. This is a show where a time-traveling assassin falls in love with the lady at the donut shop, and where Number Five was in a relationship with a mannequin for decades. We’re guaranteed to be entertained.
Season 2 lands on Netflix later this month. Strap in for a good time!
