Avatar: The Last Airbender very close to breaking Netflix record
By Dan Selcke
Avatar: The Last Airbender is about to break a crucial record on Netflix, and you can help push it over the edge.
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickelodeon’s epic about a world where people have control over the four elements, ended over a decade ago, but based on the way people are talking about it today, you wouldn’t know it. The show recently became available on Netflix, and a ton of people are either rewatching it or discovering it for the first time, which is great news, because it’s awesome.
In fact, the show has been so popular on the service that it’s been in the top 10 for the past 57 days, according to Forbes. That’s not just impressive; that means it’s in a tie with Ozark as the show that’s spent the most consecutive days in the top 10 ever.
For reference, here’s the full list:
- Ozark: 57 days
- Avatar: The Last Airbender: 57 days
- Outer Banks: 51 days
- Tiger King: 50 days
- All American: 42 days
- Love is Blind: – 39 days
- Space Force: – 34 days
- Dead to Me: 32 days
- 13 Reasons Why: 28 days
- Money Heist: 24 days
First of all, is anyone else surprised that big-name Netflix shows like Orange Is The New Black or House of Cards aren’t on this list? Or what about popular comfort food shows like The Office or Friends?
Second, it is beyond impressive that The Last Airbender, a 15-year-old show that Netflix had nothing to do with producing, is very nearly the most consistently popular show the streaming service has ever hosted.
Not that it doesn’t deserve it. Avatar: The Last Airbender is an excellently written epic fantasy story that manages to balance character development, world-building and plot momentum in a way that few such stories can. And instead of going to the medieval well, it draws from East Asian culture and legends, which helps it stand out from the pack.
All this is great news for Netflix, which is producing a live-action remake of the show with original series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko along for the ride. They haven’t started casting yet, but people are already eager to come aboard:
Add in some Last Airbender skins coming to the online game Smite, and TLA fever seems to have reached a boiling point:
At a glance, it doesn’t look like Avatar: The Last Airbender is in Netflix’s Top 10 at the moment; last Forbes checked, it was in the Number 10 spot. So if we want it to break the record, put it on the background! Then we can wait for the live-action version to break that record.
