Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller “very hopeful” for season 4

Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller talks about some of his ideas for Hannibal season 4, which it sounds like could still be a thing.

Growing up, I loved watching horror films, and Silence of the Lambs was near the top of the list. There’s still no performance quite like Sir Anthony Hopkins’ as Dr. Hannibal Lecter — he was the thing of nightmares.

Fast forward from 1991 to 2013, and Mads Mikkelsen stepped into the role of Dr. Lecter on Hannibal, which ran on NBC for three seasons before coming to an end.

But even in that short amount of time, the fandom grew quickly and remains strong even five years later. Which is why when Nerdist announced that they would be a hosting a virtual reunion with the cast and crew I was freaking out.

My first thought was that they would address the prospect of a fourth season. Fans have been asking about it for a while, and showrunner Bryan Fuller has touched on it from time to time.

Alongside Fuller, Mikkelsen, Gillian Anderson, and others joined together to reminisce about the good ‘ol days. One of the things that came up during the reunion was the unsaid, very obvious unexplored romantic feelings between Will and Hannibal. Unfortunately, the series ended without ever getting into that, but Fuller definitely knew it was there:

"Up until the point where I wrote, I was aware of the fan community wanting a sexualization between the characters. And I was entertained by that greatly, and got a kick out of it, certainly. But I was also trying to be true to [author] Thomas Harris and these characters, and Mads’ declaration of Hannibal as ‘the devil.’ It’s something I am definitely interested in, and it feels like we were on a trajectory."

Does that mean Fuller would have had the two in a romantic relationship if there was a season 4? Not necessarily. “Because of the nature of what would be happening in Season 4, in terms of the grander manipulations that Hannibal has on Will Graham’s mind, I don’t think Hannibal would want to have sex with Will, if Will wasn’t in his right mind — and Will won’t be in his right mind in Season 4.”

Fuller remains “very hopeful” that Hannibal will continue, which definitely makes me happy.
