Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon) already looking forward to The Mandalorian season 3

Giancarlo Esposito seems like the nicest person to ever be known for playing cold-blooded villains onscreen. From Gus Fring on Breaking Bad to Moff Gideon on The Mandalorian to dictator Antón Castillo in the new Far Cry game, no one does bad better than him.

But in reality, he seems like a total sweetheart, talking openly to Variety about how excited he is to be part of the Far Cry games, and even talking a little about the upcoming season of The Mandalorian, and possibly beyond.

Esposito hasn’t seen any cuts of season 2 yet, but hints that season 3 is already in the planning stages. “I’ve had a chance to have some conversations with [creator Jon Favreau],” he said. “So, I haven’t seen any of [Season] 2 yet, but it’s gonna be power-packed, and I think in Jon’s mind, he’s probably already writing [Season] 3.”

The second season of The Mandalorian will bring some big changes for the series, including the introduction of Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, a character created for Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In fact, it sounds like a lot of familiar faces from the Star Wars universe are going to show up, which has me a bit nervous, but if the new episodes are up to the standards of the first batch, I’ll happily go along with it. As for season 3, it’s hard to imagine just yet.

It is a little unsetting to hear that that there isn’t something more solid on season 3 yet. Of late, it’s become more common for production-heavy shows like Game of Thrones and Westworld to take years off in between new seasons, but The Mandalorian season 2 is scheduled to hit Disney+ in October, less than a year after the first season debuted. That’s refreshing, but they can only keep that momentum going if they start work in a timely fashion.

Of course, I’m sure the coronavirus is interfering with that. It sounds like The Mandalorian got lucky and shot most of its stuff for season 2 before the pandemic started to shut down sets around the world, but right now just isn’t the right time to mount a big new production. Hopefully they don’t have to wait too long.

In fact, with the news that Disney’s high-profile show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been delayed, I’m a little afraid The Mandalorian won’t hit its season 2 drop date, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. The sooner I can see Giancarlo Esposito sneering as Moff Gideon, using his Darksaber to cut a bloody swath on his way to tracking down Baby Yoda, the better.
