Lost Doctor Who episode “The Power of the Daleks” gets animated reboot

Doctor Who is pulling out never-before-seen footage of a lost episode, and I am so here for it. Taking it all the way back to 1966 during the reign of the Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton, the episode “The Power of the Daleks” is being brought back to life with an animated reboot.

Back in 1975, the BBC went back and purged their archive, so there isn’t a full and complete clip from this episode, but still enough to form the basis of this new project. What footage did survive has been transformed into the new animation giving us a glimpse of what this lost Doctor Who episode was all about. Plus, you can listen to the original Doctor Who soundtrack at the end of it. How cool is that?

For reference, here’s what little footage remains from the actual episode:

If you’re hoping to snag a copy of the full series, which spans six episodes, you can pre-order it on DVD and Blu-Ray via the official Doctor Who site.

"The six animated episodes replace the 2016 physical and digital release, with new and improved animation and authentic black and white visuals. The latest release also showcases a vast array of exciting new special features, in addition to all of the value added material on the 2016 release."

But wait, there’s more! The set will include two new documentaries about “The Power of the Daleks” along with so much more:

  • The 1993 BBC audio version of “The Power of the Daleks” narrated by Tom Baker
  • Raw incidental music
  • A Photogrammetry Featurette
  • The Whicker’s World episode “I Don’t Like My Monsters to Have Oedipus Complexes”
  • “Daleks – The Early Years”: A 1992 documentary presented by Peter Davison
  • “Robin Hood” – an episode from 1953: Patrick Troughton’s earliest surviving TV appearance!
  • BBC archive footage from BBC regional news, BBC Breakfast, Blue Peter and Newsnight
  • Previously unreleased animation trailers and animatics
  • Easter Eggs

First off, what is “a photogrammetry featurette” because it sounds really freaking cool, and second, what Easter Eggs will we get to see? Hopefully it’s some crazy connection to the current rebooted Doctor Who universe post-2005.

Over the last few months of quarantine and lockdown, the Doctor Who team has joined forces with the fandom to give us all sorts of special treats, from new original content to virtual watch parties. It’s always a pleasure to be a part of a fandom where the creators are dedicated to keeping the hype alive.

Next. Time Lord Victorious, a multi-platform Doctor Who experience, is coming. dark
