Charlize Theron teases a sequel to The Old Guard
By Dan Selcke
The Old Guard was an overnight sensation on Netflix. Is a sequel forthcoming? Charlize Theron sounds pretty confident.
I guess Charlize Theron has always been an action star. Looking back, she did movies like Æon Flux and The Italian Job, but it wasn’t until 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road that I woke up and smelled the coffee. With Atomic Blonde, The Fate of the Furious, and now The Old Guard all following, she’s closer to something like an action icon.
The Old Guard is her latest hit, a complete smash success on Netflix on track to reach 72 million households in its first four weeks of availability. “It’s pretty nutty, right?” Theron asked Variety. “It’s pretty crazy.”
Considering how little hype for the movie there was beforehand, I’d say “nuts” about covers it.
The Old Guard is based on a comic by writer Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez. Theron plays Andromache the Scythian, aka Andy, the leader of a band of immortal mercenaries who have spent the millennia helping out people in need. It’s good, but I don’t think there was anything on its face that indicated it would do this well, and Theron didn’t ask about numbers while they were making it. “I’m not that brave,” she laughed. “I don’t want to hear predictions. No, thank you.”
With all this success, the thing everyone is wondering is whether there will be a sequel, especially since the first movie sets itself up for one so perfectly. “We’re still pushing this one out,” Theron said. “Let’s have a little resting period, but just given the fact that all of us really want to do it, I’m sure when it’s the right time, we’ll start the conversation.”
That’s pretty much what Rucka said about a sequel when he was asked. I think it’s only a matter of time. And Andy and her colleagues have plenty of that.
