Adult Swim drops early look at Rick and Morty season 5

Adult Swim releases another new Rick and Morty short to tide fans over until season 5, which is coming along nicely, by the looks of things.

Comic-Con@Home sucked up a lot of the oxygen in the room over the weekend, but it wasn’t the only (virtual) pop culture convention going on. We also had Adult Swim Con, where the channel pulled the curtain back on one of its most popular series!

Ahead of a panel all about Rick and Morty, Adult Swim dropped an early (like, very early) look at the upcoming fifth season, wherein the mighty Rick Sanchez will encounter his…nemesis. Take a look:

As you can see, the voices are in places, but it’ll probably be a while before the animators shine the episode up so it’s good enough to air on TV. During the Comic-Con panel, Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon confirmed that the writers were finished with season 5 and had moved on to season 6, and that production will continue in quarantine.

When Rick and Morty finally does return, co-creator Justin Roiland has an idea for how new episodes should be released. This past season, Adult Swim released new episodes once a week, in two separate blocks. Roiland would rather one episode come out a month, so it’s more of an event. Good idea? Bad idea?

Anyway, if the animatic above isn’t enough to slake your thirst for more Rick and Morty, Adult Swim also released an eight-minute Japanese language short: “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider,” where super-genius and his hapless grandson go to Tokyo on the trail of a dangerous group:

This is the second Japanese-inspired Rick and Morty short we’ve gotten, after the action-heavy “Samurai & Shogun”:

I wouldn’t be surprised if another one of these came along before season 5 finally arrives.
