New oral history book will tell the inside story of Game of Thrones, and beyond
By Corey Smith
Over the years, Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd had unprecedented access to the Game of Thrones set. Now, he’s turning his experiences into a book!
As Entertainment Weekly’s Westeros correspondent, James Hibberd was given unprecedented access to the world of Game of Thrones, heading behind the scenes for many on-set interviews and first looks over the years. Now, the veteran entertainment writer is turning those experiences into his first book, titled Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Official Untold Story of the Epic Series.
Hibberd gave a more detailed description to EW.
"I’ve written hundreds of articles about the show, but each was about something specific — such as discussing an iconic scene like The Red Wedding or interviewing Emilia Clarke about the fate of Daenerys Targaryen. With Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, I got to tell the full story of making Thrones from the very beginning to the very end, and uncovered a lot of surprising new stories along the way. I cannot wait for Thrones’s fans to take this journey where they’ll get a new perspective on their favorite moments of an epic series."
Indeed, Hibberd (who was nominated for 2019 Journalist of the Year by the Los Angeles Press Club) had all-but limitless access to the series as it was airing. From interviews with everyone from series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Kit Harington (Jon), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) and everyone in-between, Hibberd can provide insight from the inside. Hibberd was even on set when they were filming the scene where Bran Stark was chosen as king in the series finale, and that thing was locked down tight. What else was he present for?
In addition, the book will feature over 70 behind-the-scenes photos from filming. And if all of that was not enough to entice fans, Hibberd also plans to explore “the future” of the franchise, including House of the Dragon, HBO’s upcoming prequel series.
Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon lands in stores October 6, but you can place your pre-order here.
