Watchmen gets the most Emmy Award nominations with 26

Watchmen, The Mandalorian, What We Do In The Shadows, Stranger Things and other genre fare rack up lots of Emmy nominations!

For years, Game of Thrones dominated the Emmy proceedings, racking up piles of nominations and a record-setting stack of awards. Now, we’re about to have the first Emmy ceremony since Game of Thrones ended. Will anything rise to take its place?

Well, the nominations for the 2020 Emmys were just announced. Here are some factoids by the numbers:

  • Netflix garnered 160 nominations, the most of any studio/streaming service and a record by itself.
  • HBO was behind it with 107 nominations.
  • HBO’s Watchmen garnered the most nominations of any show, with 26. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was behind it with 20.

Other sci-fi/fantasy fare on the board includes Westworld (11 nominations), The Handmaid’s Tale (ditto), What We Do In The Shadows (9 noms), Rick and Morty (2), Stranger Things (8) and The Mandalorian (15), the latter two of which are nominated in the category of Outstanding Drama Series, the top award of the night and the one that Game of Thrones kept taking home year after year.

The Primetime Emmy Awards will air on September 20, and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The Creative Arts Emmys, which is where they hand out all the technical awards to people not beautiful enough to be on TV, airs a few days beforehand.
