Outlander author explains why Jamie and Claire’s relationship resonates with fans

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) are one of the most beloved couples on TV. What makes them so special?
Outlander gave us a couple for the ages with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), but all credit is due Diana Gabaldon for creating these characters in the first place.
While the Starz series began in 2014, the novel series debuted in 1991. The fandom has been growing for almost three decades and shows no signs of stopping. It all comes down to how much fans resonance with Jamie and Claire as a couple. There’s something unique about them, something that draws us in and strikes every romantic chord in our heart.
Gabaldon spoke to Express about why Jamie and Claire’s relationship and marriage has stuck with fans so powerfully. “They’re very committed to each other,” she said. “They take it as a sacred vow, which I must say a lot of people don’t these days. But you know times have changed and people seem to regard marriage as not a sacred relationship, not a matter of permanent vows etc. It’s all about ‘oh I have to save up money to have a tremendous wedding’ and nothing to do with the person you’re marrying, which I think is shocking.”
She makes a great point. Jamie and Claire’s relationship isn’t something temporary; it’s an enduring expression of pure love. Sigh, #RelationshipGoals.
Gabaldon speaks from experience, as she’s been married to her husband for 50 years. They’ve had three children and lived in Arizona for over 30 years, and life has been moving along at a pace where she’s found happiness. It’s no wonder she can create such a beautiful couple for Outlander. She knows exactly what it feels like! The trials and tribulations, the happy moments…everything.
And we see that between Jamie and Claire, as well. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies, it’s real. We’ve seen them go through it all, break apart, come together, and repeat. But through it all, the love and commitment has always been there, and that’s what makes this Outlander couple so special and inspiring.
