Hannibal creator chomping at the bit to do season 4

Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller is hungry to bring us a fourth season of the show, and fans are famished for more. Fuller explains the holdup.

Hannibal has been a hot topic lately, and why not? The show was consistently underrated and never acknowledged at the Emmys. I find that to be shocking, because back in 2013 when the series first premiered, I simply couldn’t get enough of it.

For those of you who don’t know, Hannibal tells the story of the world’s most famous cannibal, Hannibal Lecter. This particular story is focused on the relationship between Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) and FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy)…and their very obvious longing for one another. You can’t convince me otherwise.

Hannibal ended after three seasons on NBC, but creator Bryan Fuller has long been trying to revive it. Speaking to Collider, Fuller explained why that’s been so tricky. Surprise surprise: it’s a rights issue:

"Martha De Laurentiis controls the rights for the Hannibal character. [Gaumont International Television], who produced the Hannibal series that we worked on, has the rights to those characters and those situations. So if we want to continue telling the tales we were telling, Gaumont needs to be involved, Martha De Laurentiis needs to be involved. Then of course we need a network to platform us."

Alright, who is going to convince Gaumont and De Laurentiis to get on board? I’m sure if we all work together, we can make this happen! I hear Change.org petitions are popular…

Once things fall into place, Fuller is all pumped and ready to give us more Hannibal. In fact, the cast and Fuller reunited during a Nerdist panel and it sounds like everyone is more than happy to return:

“I wish there was something that was definitive,” Fuller said. “I’ve had conversations with Hugh and Mads and the cast, in terms of like, ‘This is what we would do if we were allowed to come back.’ There’s some ideas that I’m very excited about that continue the strange trajectory of season 3.”

"What I love about Netflix platforming the show now is there’s an opportunity for it to be seen as a Netflix show and maybe that will reconfigure their appetite, so to speak. But nobody has said anything to me, and believe me, like the nickel hooker on the red light district I am hanging out the window, waving my legs. They know I’m ready."

And there you have it, folks. Fuller is willing to go above and beyond to bring Hannibal back into our lives. Even though they’ve had no luck getting a network to pick it up, I firmly believe in the power of fan petitions as they’ve worked time and time again in convincing networks to bring back shows. Case in point? NBC’s Timeless, Lucifer on Netflix, and many more.

If they can come back, so can Hannibal. So let’s get to it, fans, because we’re hungry for more.
