Scientists name five new species of flies after Marvel icons

Whoa, how is there a fly buzzing around out there with Deadpool’s mask on its back? These scientists are dead on with these names.

Marvel characters were honored in a big way by the Australian federal government agency CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization). While naming 165 new species, the agency decided to give five of them the superhero treatment. How Marvel-ous, wouldn’t you say?

Starting off with the God of Thunder, aka Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a newly discovered kind of fly below was given the scientific name of “Daptolestes bronteflavus,” which translates to “blond thunder.” You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

Also notice how the gold and light brown flecks on the fly’s body mimic Thor’s blond hair and gold outfit. I’m smitten over the creativity here, truly.

But if you thought the “blond thunder” fly was fitting for Thor, you will be blown away by “Humorolethalis sergius,” aka “wet and deadly”. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce you to the fly named after Marvel’s Deadpool.

Whoa, this fly literally has Deadpool’s mask on his back. I’m blown away by how uncanny and ridiculous it is that there’s a fly version of Deadpool buzzing around out there. CSIRO, you guys are killing it with these findings!

Now there can’t be flies named after Marvel characters without naming one after the man who created this universe in the first place. Yes, that’s right: there’ss even a fly named after Stan Lee himself! Named “Daptolestes leei”, this species has markings that remind you of the late Marvel founder’s iconic sunglasses and white mustache.

Loki and Black Widow were also honored with flies named “Daptolestes illusiolautus” (“elegant deception”) and “Daptolestes feminategus” (“woman wearing leather”) respectively. If you’re curious to see what these three look like, check out CSIRO entomologist Dr. Bryan Lessard’s video where he breaks down the naming process:

But seriously, though, how cool was the Deadpool fly?!

I wonder if Ryan Reynolds has seen it yet…
