Dave Bautista auditioned to play Bane in The Batman—Just how many villains are in this thing?
By Dan Selcke
Dave Bautista apparently tried to land the role of Bane in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman movie. That brings the total number of villains up to…a lot.
After a couple of movies starring Ben Affleck’s Batman, aka Battfleck, it’s once again time for a new actor to don the cape and cowl and fight crime on the streets of Gotham City. This time it’s Twilight veteran Robert Pattinson, who will star in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
The cast of The Batman is impressive…and pretty big. In addition to Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, we’ve got Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
It’s a good cast, but does anybody else feel like they’re overloading on villains? Batman is going to fight Catwoman, the Riddler, and the Penguin? We know that the movie won’t be an origin story, so they won’t have to waste time showing us how Batman became Batman again, but it still seems like a lot.
Well, apparently there’s more where that came from. There was a theory going around that Dave Bautista, known for playing the overly literal alien Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, might be playing the muscle-bound Bane in The Batman. Writing on Twitter, Bautista himself shot the rumor down, but does imply that he auditioned for the role:
So Bautista isn’t playing Bane, but he did “try his best” to land to part, implying that Bane is in the movie. So that’s Catwoman, the Riddler, the Penguin, and Bane. Again I say, that’s a lotta villains. There are also rumors that Peter Sarsgaard’s character, Gotham District Attorney Gil Colso, could be a code-name for Two-Face, another iconic Batman bad guy.
So what’s happening here? Is The Batman really going to pit the Caped Crusader against four-five baddies? Frankly, that sounds bloated and boring from the jump. My bet is no. I’m guessing that Reeves and Warner Bros. are planning for The Batman to be the first in a series of new Batman movies, and are going to introduce several villain characters with cameos with plans to fill them out in later films.
Or it really is gonna be a villain-on-Batman dogpile, I dunno. What do you make of it?
