The Umbrella Academy showrunner breaks down the changes he made to the comic when writing season 2, and even the possibility of a season 3…
The second season of The Umbrella Academy was nothing short of amazing. It finds the superpowered Hargreeves siblings stuck in the past at a critical moment in United States history. But just that’s just one of the many complications they face. And that cliffhanger, though!
If you haven’t seen this series, I assure you it’ll be worth every second of your time.
The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman spoke with Geeks of Color about the second season…and the possibility of a third. Before watching the video below, be mindful that it is filled with MAJOR SEASON 2 SPOILERS, so skip if you’re not willing to go down that hole.
Blackman talks about constructing the story for season 2, based on the graphic novel by Gerard Way. The show sticks fairly close, but as always, some changes were made, such as narrowing the narrative down to a 10-day period.
And he chose the perfect 10 days, combining an apocalyptic doomsday with the civil rights movement one of the most famous assassinations in U.S. history: the death of President John F. Kennedy. It was a dynamic backdrop.
Blackman also came up with the idea of the siblings falling into the past at different times, which complicated things by letting them develop new lives before they started meeting back up. “I wanted to make it not only amusing but also complicated for them to regroup as a family.” And he dreamed up the character of Lila (Ritu Arya), together with her powers.
Although Blackman know where the story is going, he remained tight-lipped about that cliffhanger. “It’s going to be a great season 3 if we get one,” he said. You’re killing us here.
I have no doubt that there is renewal news around the corner, especially with the hype that the second season has already generated. A potential third season is going to crack this world wide open after the events of season 2. I’m getting goosebumps thinking about the scope of the story, which is why Netflix needs to stop torturing us and assure us that there’s more to come!
