Ruby Rose on her Batwoman exit: “Being the lead of a superhero show is tough”

Ruby Rose is finally opening up about her abrupt exit from The CW’s Batwoman. What made her want to walk away from the lead role?

Ruby Rose shocked the world when she decided to walk away from the title on Batwoman, a part of the popular Arrowverse. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Rose spilled the tea on what ultimately led to this difficult decision.

“Being the lead of a superhero show is tough,” Rose said. “Being the lead in anything is tough. But I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery. I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn’t the best idea. Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that. But as far as being a lead of a show or a film —  regardless if it’s action or if it’s emotional — in whichever ways it’s taxing.”

Rose had surgery after she suffered a spinal cord injury performing a stunt on the set of the show. I wonder if her decision to come back to work so quickly was one she made herself or if the production asked her to return.

Whatever happened, it ultimately led to Rose’s exit from Batwoman. The show has since brought in a new lead: God Friended Me star Javicia Leslie will play a character named Ryan Wilder. Ryan will look into why the original Batwoman, Kate Kate, disappeared, and slowly step into the role herself.

As for how Ruby Rose feels about her replacement, she’s actually super supportive of Leslie. “I think she definitely knows what she’s doing and she seems fantastic. I think that honestly, I was so proud and so happy when I was told who would be replacing me. I’m just really stoked and I’m definitely going to watch the next season as well and see how it all comes together.”

I won’t lie: I really, really loved Ruby Rose as Batwoman. I still remember when we found out she’d be playing her, and how perfectly it all came together. Watching her over the course of the first season, which included her partaking in the epic Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths…it was everything I imagined it would be. Little did we know that these episodes would be the only ones we’d get of Ruby Rose as the female caped crusader.

Despite all these unexpected changes, I am super excited to see what Javicia Leslie brings to the table and how the series is going to change as a result. Perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised with this new direction!
