With DC hit with layoffs this week, what’s happening to DC Universe? Also, the Stargirl creator assures us that season 2 will be just as good as season 1.
It’s been a rough week for DC. DC Comics was hit with layoffs, as was streaming service DC Universe. That left a lot of people wondering: what was going to happen to all the original shows on DC Universe, stuff like Doom Patrol, Titans and Harley Quinn?
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, DC chief creative officer Jim Lee confirmed what a lot of people already suspected. “The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max,” Lee said. “Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content. The amount of content you get, not just DC , but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition, if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.”
Lee also assured fans that DC Comics was indeed going to keep producing comics, if anyone was concerned, but it’s clear that things are in flux at the moment.

And there are other DC Universe shows with uncertain futures. Take Stargirl, a new DC live-action show that debuted exclusively on the streaming service just earlier this year. The first season was a hit and the show was renewed for a second season…that will air exclusively on The CW, alongside other DC shows like The Flash and Black Lightening. This had some fans worried that the budget would be reduced and the tone changed so it’s more in line with network standards. Is there any truth to that?
“Listen, we have an amazing team, an amazing cast, amazing writers, and we’re going to deliver the best show possible,” executive producer Geoff Johns told TV Line. “Our goal is to deliver a show that is cinematic and different than all the other shows and is of the utmost quality, and we have a lot of talented people to do that. The pacing, the tone, the world… we’ve already established that, and we have the best VFX house ; they’re not going anywhere.”
"Startup costs are always the most expensive, obviously — the building and testing, and a lot of that we’ve already done. We have some new things to get into, which is exciting, but we wouldn’t do Season 2 if we didn’t think we could make it as good as Season 1, but different. We’re going to explore different story, different thematics, different avenues for the characters. We’re all working incredibly hard on this because we’re so proud of Season 1, and we want Season 2 to be even better. That’s our goal, nothing less."
So that’s not a 100% straight answer about whether the show will change, but at least the team is committed to still making it good.
We may find out more information on these topics at the upcoming DC FanDome, which just announced its full schedule. With all the news surrounding DC at the moment, there will surely be a lot of curious eyes on that event when it goes down on Saturday, August 22.
