Studio auctioning off Game of Thrones props after being forced to close

3D Creations made props and sets for major franchises like Game of Thrones. Now, thanks to the coronavirus, it’s auctioning everything off.

Ian Westbrook founded 3D Creations in 1985. For over three decades, the company has created props and sets for theater, film and TV, working on franchises like The Pirates of the Caribbean and HBO’s Game of Thrones. But in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic, Westbrook has had to shut down, and is auctioning off all of his wares, from dragon eggs to Daenerys Targaryen’s silver-white wigs to pirate leather hides and beyond.

Obviously, this is a bittersweet pill for fans who might be interested in buying some of these things, knowing they’re only getting a chance because a long-running company has had to shut down. “2020 was supposed to be our best year yet, but coronavirus made it our worst,” Westbrook told Great Yarmouth Mercury. “I worked out I could keep the company afloat until Christmas, but with overheads at around £30,000 a month it made more sense to quit while we’re behind.”

Although “the design part” of Westbrook’s business will continue from his office in Gorleston in the U.K., with him and one other associate, this is a blow for Westbrook’s 10 full-time employees. “I’m saddened because I wanted to be in this job for the next 10 years at least,” he said. “The theatre is such a spider’s web. It’s not just about the buildings or the performers. When a theatre shuts down, so do the light companies, the sound companies, the set-designers. It’s heartbreaking. Most theatres need to run at 75pc capacity to make profit – and this was never going to be feasible under social distancing rules.”

We can see everybody in the entertainment industry trying to deal with the strain that the coronavirus has put on them. AMC is trying to cope by reopening movie theaters in the U.S. even as the virus continues to rage on, but it’s anybody’s guess if these measures will actually work. It is indeed heartbreaking to watch.

Anyway, if you’re interested in bidding on any of Westbrook’s wares, the auction is live until 3:00 p.m. GMT on August 26. You can bid online here. Or if you’re in the area, you can head to the 3D Creations studio in Gorleston in person from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays.
