Before he signed on for Aquaman, James Wan was famous for directing the Conjuring movies. It is time for horror in the Seven Seas? Anglerfish, maybe?
Aquaman is definitely one of the better DC Extended Universe movies to come out thus far. Perhaps it’s my love for Jason Momoa, but the movie actually managed to make a superhero’s who’s power is the ability to talk to fish interesting. I was all in on Aquaman’s solo movie, and I’m ready for whatever the sequel has to offer.
I’m not sure I could say that I was scared at any point during the first installment, but according to director James Wan, there will be more horror in the sequel.
“Just like the first movie had a touch of my horror sensibility in it, in regards to the trench sequence, I would say there will be a little bit of that in this next one,” Wan said in a recent interview. “I think that’s a big part of who I am and it just naturally comes out in these kinds of films, and especially in a movie like Aquaman, where the story takes place in these underwater worlds that can be very scary.”
Wan is known for his work in the horror genre, having done both Conjuring movies. I didn’t sleep for days after watching those, so if anyone is going to inject some horror into this undersea superhero story, it’s him.
Perhaps we’ll learn more when Wan and Patrick Wilson (Orm) attend an Aquaman panel at DC’s virtual event, the DC FanDome. (Is Momoa going to make an appearance? Let us know!) The Aquaman panel is scheduled for Saturday, August 22 at 7:00 pm EST — you can stream it online here after you sign up, or catch the encore on Sunday.
I just want to know what other horrors lurk under the sea. As long as it’s not talking piranhas or that freaky anglerfish from Finding Nemo, I’m good.
See you (virtually) at the DC FanDome this weekend!
