The CW reveals when Supernatural returns, while its stars land new gigs
By Dan Selcke
Supernatural will finally air its last crop of episodes later this year. Meanwhile, star Jensen Ackles gets a gig on Amazon’s The Boys.
Hollywood continues to crawl back from its coronavirus-induced standstill. In the latest example, The CW has announced the return date of Supernatural, its long-running monster-hunting drama that was cut off in the middle of its 15th and final season earlier this year. The final crop of episodes will start airing on October 8, with the series finale landing on November 19.
That is, if the coronavirus doesn’t throw another wrench into things. According to Variety, filming is supposed to start up in Vancouver today, which depended on U.S. studios and British Columbia unions coming to an agreement over safety procedures. Hopefully they’ll prove effective, but if the age of COVID has taught us anything, it’s that everything can go haywire at any moment.
The CW also announced that the DC Universe series Swamp Thing will have its broadcast premiere on October 6. Out with one genre show, in with another, and all during Halloween month!
Supernatural has been a part of fans’ lives for a long time now, and it’s going to be strange when it’s no longer on the air. That goes double for stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who play brothers Dean and Sam Winchester respectively. Ackles is clearly pretty worried about it:
Happily, Supernatural producer Eric Kripke has come along and offered Ackles a gig on his other show: The Boys over on Amazon. The gonzo superhero show tells the story of a group of violent, corrupt superheroes and the guerrilla team — that would be “the Boys” determined to take them down.
Ackles will play Soldier Boy, a World War II-era superhero who went on to become a mainstay in pop culture.
“When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment,” Kripke said in a statement. “I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of ‘Supernatural’ to ‘The Boys.’”
This will all happen in the third season of The Boys, by the way. The second season premieres on September 4 on Amazon!
