According to star Jenna Elfman, the next season of Fear the Walking Dead is going to some very dark places. And the new Morgan key art has us nervous.
The more I hear about the upcoming sixth season of Fear The Walking Dead, the more excited I get, mainly because the cast can’t stop talking about how it’s going to be darker and more messed up than ever before.
It’s taken the show a while to get where it’s gotten, but the slow burn is about to pay off in a big way. It all starts with Morgan, who’s fate has hung in the balance since the season 5 finale. The teasers for the new season have delighted in drawing out the mystery of what happens to him. Is he turning into a Walker? Are his eyes pooling with blood a result of being shot? The new key art for the season makes it look pretty grim:
Personally, I think that Morgan is alive…in dire straights, but alive. Let’s hope I’m right.
To give you all a quick refresher, the fifth season ended with the group splitting up once again just after celebrating John and June’s wedding. They are now all under the control of Virginia (Colby Minifie) and separated between different settlements. What freaks me out is that Virginia is more sinister than anyone realizes. After all, she’s the one who shoots Morgan point-blank and leaves him for dead. Who knows what else she has planned?
Speaking on the Talk Dead to Me podcast, Jenna Elfman (June) gave us some hint. “Dark. Dark” she said. “It’s so dark!”
"So what that separation and being under the pressure of Virginia does to each of us in our own way, and what is being run on us, what kind of experiences we’re being forced to have… you have these strong characters that it’s been established how capable they are, so they’re allowed to do what Virginia wants them to do. Luckily, June’s abilities in nursing are valuable to Virginia. And it’s the one area that when June is staying true to her offering in the world, it keeps her sane and grounded, and she knows she can help."
So basically, Fear The Walking Dead is introducing the female version of Negan? Great. If I see any barbed wire bats, I just might have a full-on panic attack.
“But there is some messed up stuff going on, and it affects each person in a way that taps into their vulnerability, and they change,” Elfman continued. “People will be changing this season.”
Fear the Walking Dead is no stranger to reinventing itself, and I think it could be due for another reset. We need to see some of these guys go dark and burst out of their good guy bubbles. I know that may sound horrible, but for entertainment purposes, it’s something I want to see.
In any case, I just want Morgan to be alive when all is said and done. Because that is a blow none of us are ready to take: not now, not ever.
Fear the Walking Dead season 6 premieres on Sunday, October 11.
