Sounds like Olivia Wilde is directing a Spider-Woman movie for Sony
By Ashley Hurst
We’ve heard about Sony wanting to make movies about Spider-Man characters like Black Cat, Jackpot, Silver Sable, Madame Web…and here’s another.
Disney may have the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Sony Pictures is building a superhero universe of its own based around Spider-Man and his gallery of supporting characters. There are the Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland, of course, which Sony shares with Disney. Then there’s Tom Hardy’s Venom, which is getting a sequel, and Jared Leto’s Morbius.
Now, it looks like they’ve found a director for another exciting Spider-Movie. After making her successful directorial debut last year with Booksmart, actor and filmmaker Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy) is being eyed by Sony to helm a movie that would potentially see the live-action debut of Spider-Woman!
At this point, this is a “secret” movie, so let’s just keep it between ourselves. Deadline cautions that nothing is confirmed, but the likelihood of it centering around Spider-Woman (aka Jessica Drew) is high. Sony has yet to comment.
And if the report wasn’t enough to convince you that we’re getting Spider-Woman The Movie, perhaps this tweet from Wilde herself will:
Speaks for itself.
But folks on Twitter still want clarity, of course. Wilde has received thousands of messages from excited fans. That includes Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf in Disney’s Frozen:
To be clear, I think the movie is for Sony, not Marvel Studios, but we all get excited sometimes.
Wilde will write the script alongside Katie Silberman. Spider-Man veteran Amy Pascal (Venom, Into the Spider-Verse) is a producer and Rachel O’Connor (Spider-Man: Far From Home) is an as executive producer.
There have been rumors about Sony developing a Spider-Woman movie flying for a while, as well as rumors that they plan to give solo movies to other female characters within the Spider-verse such as Black Cat, Jackpot and Silver Sable. Earlier this year, we heard that a mysterious Madame Web movie was in development with S.J. Clarkson set to direct. Unfortunately, there are no further details on it. Hopefully, the rumors hold true!
We don’t have a release date for Spider-Woman yet, but Sony still has some Marvel action coming up to keep us engaged. Next up is Morbius, which should be coming in March 2021. And then there’s Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage set for June 2021. Let’s hope the coronavirus cooperates and those dates hold.
