Doctor Who and Superman are more alike than we realize

Could Superman and the Doctor Who be distant cousins? Perhaps.

Doctor Who has always immersed in a world of strange, distant lands of the future, past, and present, and introduced us to alien species of all kinds. But have you ever stopped to wonder some of the striking similarities between the Doctor and…Superman?

At first thought, you might find it odd to think about, but during their virtual Metaverse Doctor Who panel, former series stars Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill discussed just this very idea. Side note: Smith, Gillan, and Darvill starred in Doctor Who together as the Eleventh Doctor and his two companions Amy and Rory, respectively. Seeing them back together, even in this fleeting capacity was amazing.

But anyway, Darvill drew the comparisons between the two alien species, and I have to say, it makes a whole lot of sense.

"[He]’s quintessentially all-American and Doctor Who is quintessentially very British."

This is very true. They’re both strong and proud representations of the cultures and places they come from, and it’s always at the epicenter of their every move and decision. But most importantly, they strive to save humankind and keep them protected from the evil forces that seek to destroy it.

That perhaps is the biggest parallel between the two characters, and honestly their most honorable one. And what makes it all that better is that back in 2016, the Doctor Who Christmas special, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” referenced the Man of Steel through its characters–a nerdy glasses wearing gentleman turned superhero named ‘The Ghost’ working alongside a female reporter he’s in love with.

So, clearly, even the showrunners see the obvious comparison there.

I think I speak for many of us when I say that we are all-in for a Superman and Doctor Who crossover. Can’t you see it already? The two alien powerhouses come together to defeat evil and save the world and universe from falling apart in a story I’d call, “Doctor Super” or “Super Doctor” or “Super Who”.

Honestly, the possibilities are endless.
