Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is stacked with one hell of a cast!
Pinocchio is coming to Netflix in the best way possible, folks. Not only is it spearheaded by the iconic Guillermo del Toro whose career speaks for itself, but it boasts quite possibly the most epic cast ever.
There is so much to talk about when it comes to this del Toro Netflix movie, and I can’t seem to figure out where to start. But first things first, it is going to be a stop-motion production. For those who don’t know about stop-motion animation, it is a tedious filmmaking technique that requires objects to be manipulated frame by frame so it appears as if there is movement when the scenes come together.
Movies like Kubo and the Two Strings, Boxtrolls, and Missing Link are stellar examples of stop-motion and it is exactly how del Toro’s Pinocchio will take form.
But just as impressive as the stop-motion aspect to Pinocchio, so is the cast.
Seriously, it’s insane.
Take a peek at Netflix Film’s tweet to see for yourself.
Ewan McGregor? Tilda Swinton? Cate Blanchett? Christoph Waltz?
What is this cast?! And how did it come to even be? I have to say I’m insanely impressed.
We know McGregor is playing “The Talking Cricket”, David Bradley is set to play Gepetto, and newcomer Gregory Mann is going to play Pinocchio himself–but what about the others?
- Tilda Swinton: “The Fairy With Turquoise Hair”
- Christoph Waltz: “Fox and Cat”
- Ron Perlman: “Mangiafuoco”
As for Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, Finn Wolfhard, and Burn Gorman–we have yet to learn who they will be playing. But if I had to guess, I could see Wolfhard playing one of the boys turned donkeys in Pleasure Island, Blanchett playing some evil assistant to Mangiafuoco, Turturro playing the giant whale that engulfs Pinocchio and Gepetto, and everyone else–I’m all out of ideas.
I think what I’m most excited about when it comes to Pinocchio is the fact that it’s del Toro’s movie. He’s known for his horror movies and shows like The Strain and Crimson Peak but he’s also dabbled in animation with Trollhunters. His eclectic taste in the movies he creates is going to make this version of Pinocchio one we won’t ever forget.
I can already see the madness that will ensue as del Toro puts his very unique twist and touch to one of the most beloved classics in history. Let’s just say, “When You Wish Upon A Star” will never sound the same again after del Toro is done with it.
