What will The Umbrella Academy do about that season 2 cliffhanger? A small Easter Egg hints at a solution to their new problem. Beware SPOILERS ahead!

Fans of The Umbrella Academy know that the quirky, off-beat superhero drama is packed with Easter Eggs, and one of them may point the way to a solution for the pickle the Hargreeves siblings find themselves in at the end of the second season. Read on, but beware SPOILERS below.

The Umbrella Academy season 2 finds our dysfunctional heroes trapped in the ’60s, trying to stop an apocalypse they apparently brought back with them from the future. They manage to wriggle out of it, only to return to their own time to find that their actions apparently created an alternate reality. Their stern adopted father, Reginald Hargreeves, is still alive, but it looks like he adopted a completely different set of superpowered children now led by their deceased brother Ben, who apparently has gone full emo in this timeline.

The name for this new group? The Sparrow Academy. We’re guessing the Umbrella Academy and Sparrow Academy will spar in season 3, fighting with their fists, their powers, and stories about how badly Reginald treated them growing up. Who had the worse childhood? Fight!

So how do our heroes get out of this mess? A scene from the eighth episode of season 2, “The Seven Stages,” may provide an answer. In this scene, Reginald’s girlfriend Grace finds his secret room, which is bursting with all kinds of plans and conspiracies, including one to assassinate John F. Kennedy. Among the designs plastering the walls is a schematic for the “Televator,” which Reginald describes in his notes as “the next great mode of transportation.”

So what the hell is a Televator? For that, we need to consult the graphic novels by Gerard Way.

In Way’s comic books, the Televator is sort of elevator that can cross both space and time; it’s kind of a like a Tardis from Doctor Who, but it’s an elevator instead of a phone booth. It can also visit other dimensions, which could be useful in solving the situation our heroes find themselves in at the end of season 2. In theory, it could let them zip right back to their reality, although knowing them, they’d probably stumble into another apocalypse somehow.

The Televator also hints at Reginald Hargreeves’ true origins. In the graphic novel, readers learn right off the bat that Reginald is not from Earth, but rather an alien visitor. In the season 2 finale of the show, Reggie pulls off his “skin” to reveal his alien face before killing the cabal behind Kennedy’s death. The Televator may be beyond humanity’s ability to create, but someone like Reggie can handle it.

Why haven’t we seen the device until now? The most obvious answer is that Reginald kept his cards close to his chest. In season 1, the Hargreeves kids clearly barely knew their adoptive father, and only began to learn about his true nature after his death. But now that Reginald is alive in (an alternate) 2019, hopefully he’s had enough time since 1963 to actually build the Televator, and is willing to share it with his kids from another life.

Five could also try to warp himself and his siblings back to their own reality, but while we’ve seen him jump back and forth in time, we’ve never seen him jump across timelines, something the Televator can accomplish. Also, considering how his teleporting has gotten him and everyone else in trouble in the past, maybe it’s best to look for another way.

Bring on season 3!
