Stranger Things star worried filming season 4 will be “lonely” and “scary”

With the new coronavirus precautions in place, Stranger Things star Maya Hawke (Robin) is worried that things are going to be very different.

The coronavirus lockdowns have resulted in many film and TV sets around the world shutting down, and when work resumes, life on set is very different than it was before, with safety precautions necessitating that cast and crew isolate for long periods of time and be very careful when interacting. This shot of producers chatting through a screen on the set of The Witcher gives you an idea of what the new normal might look like:

The Witcher isn’t the only Netflix hit getting back to work. Filming will soon resume on the fourth season of Stranger Things, and star Maya Hawke (Robin Buckley) worries it could be both “scary” and “lonely,” but is still excited to get back to it.

Maya, who’s the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, told Entertainment Tonight Canada how she thinks she and her costars will be affected by the new safety precautions. “We’re just sort of taking it day by day and waiting for the right moment but everyone is dying to go back to work.”

"I’m intimidated by how scary it could be and how much lonelier the filming process could become, you know how much separation between people and groups of people and people with different jobs."

Film productions are doing a lot to make sure people have as little contact as possible. Many sets are requiring everybody on set to get regular COVID tests, people visit the set in staggered shifts, and when the cameras aren’t rolling, distance is encouraged.

It will definitely be different, but Hawke ultimately thinks it’ll be worth it. “An amazing thing about making movies is everybody comes together and everybody’s jobs are just as important as anyone else’s, and everyone has to do their best, or else it all goes to hell,” she said. “I’m worried about that togetherness being lost, but I don’t know. We’ll see what happens. I’m excited to experience it.”

As for exactly when the Stranger Things team will get back to work, Hawke said “it was looking incredibly likely” that filming resume continue in September.

It’s odd that we’ve already had a season 4 teaser even though filming isn’t close to finishing. If you cast your mind back to February, you might remember that short teaser that confirmed the anticipated return of David Harbour as Sheriff Hopper.

As for Robin, we last saw her and Steve getting new jobs after the Hawkins mall was trashed by a rampaging monster from another dimension; just another day in Hawkins, Indiana.

It’s going to be a while before we get to return to Hawkins, Indiana, but at least we’ve got some awesome comics to keep us occupied until then. The latest comic, Stranger Things: Science Camp from Jody Houser and artist Edgar Salaza, tells the story of how Dustin met his girlfriend Suzie. You can catch issue #1 when it releases September 30 at Dark Horse comics!
