Emilia Clarke points out gender disparity in Game of Thrones costumes
By Dan Selcke
Emilia Clarke wore some tremendous costumes as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, but not all costumes are created equal:
As Daenerys Targaryen, Emilia Clarke wore a lot of costumes during her time on Game of Thrones, from airy dresses to tattered rags to full-coverage winter gear once the Dragon Queen finally arrived in Westeros. The costumes on the show were often pretty spectacular, but while (virtually) speaking with her Last Christmas director Paul Feig at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Clarke revealed that men’s and women’s costumes were sometimes treated differently.
“The guys in the Night’s Watch, Jon Snow, are wearing a woolly mammoth all the time,” she said, accurately describing the fur-covered outfits preferred by Northerners. “When we were shooting things in a hot country when they had all of those things on, they had this pump that had its own little generator attached into the costumes.”
"They used it to pump cold water into these pipes and cool them all down so underneath they had this weird kind of cooling system. But girls weren’t allowed that. All I could get was the back of my wig to be lifted up. It’s too hard, I’ve got a wig on, they don’t make cold packs you know, you put ice packs on yourself."
I remember one time I interviewed Rupert Vansittart, who played Bronze Yohn Royce, and him telling us about the cooling systems built into the heavy costumes, which were used not just for filming in hot countries but also on sets under bright lighting.
It sounds pretty amazing, but I didn’t know about the gender disparity. You’d figure they could have at least found a way to put some cooling strips under her wig, no?
