Avatar 2 is shaping up to be a Big Deal kind of movie, but we still don’t know much about it. Kate Winslet gives us a little info on her character.
James Cameron and crew at hard at work on several sequels to Avatar, the most successful film that everyone just kinda forgot about after they saw it in 2009. Regardless, Avatar 2 will return us to the distant world of Pandora, where an alien species called the Na’vi mix it up with human colonists there looking to mine a rare material called Unobtanium.
We don’t know exactly what the new movie will entail, but we know it’ll involve the oceans of Pandora and that characters like Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) will return. Sigourney Weaver will be back, too, even though her character died in the first movie. A lot can happen in a sic-fi story.
Cameron is bringing in some of his old favorite actors, too, including Kate Winslet, with whom he worked on the equally water-logged production Titanic. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Winslet revealed that her character’s name is Ronal…and not much else. “I play a water person,” she said. “I am a water person.”
"It was so wonderful to work with Jim again. Time has changed him. Jim has become a father a few more times over. He is a calmer person. Chilled. You can just feel him enjoying it more this time."
She also said that she had to learn how to “free-dive” for the movie, since so much of it is set underwater. “My longest breath hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds.” Not too shabby.
As for what a “water person” is, it’s anybody’s guess. Is she a water alien? Is she a human who just likes the water? We’ll find out when Avatar 2 comes out in December of next year, provided the coronavirus doesn’t mess with the production too much.
More immediately, Winslet is starring in Ammonite as Mary Anning, a real-life fossil hunter who had an affair with a younger married woman (Saoirse Ronan). The trailer has gotten a lot of buzz over the sex scenes, which Winslet and Ronan choreographed themselves:
Ammonite comes out on September 11, again, coronavirus permitting.
