The third season of Westworld ended with Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) waking up after taking a long, mysterious journey. Wright sheds some light on it.
At the end of each new season of Westworld, viewers tend to have just as many questions as answers, and the third season was no exception. With Dolores gone for good (supposedly), an imposter Man in Black on the loose, and Dolores-turned-Charlotte plotting revenge, the show’s fourth season could go just about anywhere.
One character who seems to have an idea of his purpose going forward — even if it hasn’t been revealed to us yet — is Jeffrey Wright’s Bernard Lowe. Bernard’s season 3 story ends with his realization that Dolores has put the Sublime inside his head. Not only that, but he’s able to access it, meaning he may be able to communicate with the hosts that ventured to The Valley Beyond in season 2.
Fans only see this from the outside, as Bernard sits in a hotel room while he visits the Sublime, dead to the world. He comes to at the very end of the post-credits sequence; he’s covered in dust, so clearly some time has past, but we don’t know how much. It’s a mysterious way to end the season.
We’ll surely learn more in season 4, but until then, Wright revealed in an interview with The Wrap that Bernard found some clarity during his trip. “Bernard steps into The Sublime, and at some point, he steps out of it, it seems with a bit more information than he had previously,” Wright said. “And perhaps with a bit more clarity than he’s previously enjoyed.”
What exactly did he find in the Sublime? That’s just one of many questions we’ll have to wait to answer. Wright is more open about discussing how long he was there.
“Now, the question of when it is that he comes out, I think, is a very simple one. I think we find him emerging from the Sublime after the pandemic has passed,” Wright quipped. “He’s come out of that thing fully vaccinated, OK, and ready to live a new and more free existence going forward. Where he’s going, we don’t necessarily know, but he’s different than he was before he left.”
It’ll be interesting to see how Bernard’s newfound clarity impacts his story, and how it’ll affect Maeve, Charlotte-who’s-not-Charlotte, and the new Man in Black. We’ll find out when the fourth season arrives in 2022.
