His Dark Materials superfan Ed Sheeran just named his daughter Lyra

Admitted His Dark Materials superfan Ed Sheeran and wife Cherry Seaborn welcome their first child, and her name might ring a bell.

Philip Pullman’s fantasy book trilogy His Dark Materials boasts some huge celebrity stans, including cast members James McAvoy and Lin-Manuel Miranda. But that’s not all! Beloved singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran surprised fans by announcing the birth of his baby daughter, whom he and wife Cherry Seaborn named Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

His Dark Materials fans might hear that name and immediately think of Lyra Belacqua, the hero of Pullman’s story, played by Dafne Keen in the HBO show. And we’re not just grasping at straws here, either; Sheeran has admitted to loving the books:

Come to think of it, the middle name “Antarctica” sounds like it could have been inspired by His Dark Materials as well, since the cold and snowy north is very much a part of Lyra’s journey.

And why not name your daughter after Lyra? She’s adventurous, brave, loyal and fearless. Not to mention, Antartica is very much a part of Lyra’s world in the books and series, so it’s quite the fitting and perfect middle name. Maybe he and Cherry can read the books as bedtime stories to Lyra until she’s old enough to binge-watch the HBO show with her parents.

Congratulations Ed Sheeran, Cherry Seaborn and little Lyra! And for other His Dark Materials fans out there, the second season of HBO’s show debuts this November.
