The CW gave us a sneak peak at its upcoming Superman & Lois, as well as unmasking the new name for the Arrowverse: the CWverse. Thanks but no thanks.
The CW’s Arrowverse launched with the introduction of the Green Arrow. I don’t think anyone back then imagined the universe expanding to what it is today: a network of DC superhero shows that includes The Flash, Black Lightning, Stargirl and more. It’s been quite a journey, and one I’m proud to say I’ve been a part of since the Arrow series premiere back in 2012.
It’s officially September now, but we have no new Arrowverse fall premieres to look forward to, which is strange. Thanks to the coronavirus delaying things, we’ll have to hang on for a few more months to see how the next season of Arrowverse shows plays out.
Or should I saw, the next season of “CWverse” shows? That’s the name The CW gives them in a new clip that shows off what’s on offer now that Arrow is wrapped:
I’m on the fence about this apparent title change, and I’m hoping it’s just for this teaser. The entire universe kicked off with Arrow, and it just feels right to include that show in the name even if it’s no longer on the air. I get why The CW might want to change the name, but my vote is to keep it the way it is, and pay deference to how we got here.
Setting aside this title change, the clip itself is all kinds of epic. I love how they splice in pages from the comics with the scenes from the shows. But better yet, they start the entire thing off with a homage to the show that started it all — Arrow — before exploring everything that followed, including The Flash, Batwoman, Black Lightning, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Stargirl and Supergirl.
Watching the clip also made me emotional because the Arrowverse (yes, I’m still calling it that) has grown so much over the last decade and shows no signs of stopping. Come 2021, Superman & Lois will be the newest member of the family, and the clip gives us a sneak peak of what’s to come.
I’m reserving judgements for when the series premieres, but getting glimpses of Smallville, the Kent farm, and Lois Lane has me in my feelings and I cannot wait to see Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch back on our television screens as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane. They did an amazing job during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover, and it’s about time we have another Superman show.
I was surprised to see that the clip included clips of Ruby Rose’s Batwoman, given that Javicia Leslie will be playing the title role in season 2. Then again, just because Rose won’t be a part of universe going forward doesn’t mean we disregard her legacy. Kind of like how the name of the shared universe should honor Arrow’s legacy…?
