Sony plans live-action series about Spider-Man spinoff hero Silk

In addition to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies, Sony is working on Spider-Woman, Madame Web, Morbius, and now a TV series all about the hero Silk!

Marvel has its Marvel Cinematic Universe and Warner Bros. the DCEU. Sony, meanwhile, has making its own network of movies based on characters in the Spider-Man universe. The latest character to swing into development is Silk, aka Cindy Moon, who has powers very similar to Spider-Man himself.

This comes hot on the heels of recent news that Olivia Wilde has signed on to develop a Spider-Woman movie. There was also a Madame Web movie said to be in development earlier this year. What makes Silk different is that she’s a TV series, not a movie.

According to Variety, the live-action Silk show will be executive produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the creators of Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. Spider-Man veteran Amy Pascal will produce. Lauren Moon, best known for her work on the Netflix series Atypical, is in talks to write the show. Like Cindy Moon herself, Lauren is Korean-American; they even share a surname.

No network is attached to the series at the moment, but Amazon is in talks to acquire it.

Silk made her first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #1, created by writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramosin 2014. Cindy Moon is a Korean-American superhero who got her superpowers the same way Spider-Man did: being bitten by a radioactive spider. Silk has appeared briefly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as played by Tiffany Espensen, but don’t expect the new series to use that version.

Silk will join a growing web of Spider-Movies and shows from Sony. In addition to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, we’ve got Tom Hardy’s antihero movie Venom, Jared Leto as Morbius the Living Vampire, and the mega-hit Into the Spiderverse, all of which have sequels on the way. Further down the line, we’ll hopefully see Madame Web and Spider-Woman take center stage as well.

As always, with the series only just going into development, there are no plot details yet. Watch this space.
