Doctor Who: Sacha Dhawan “would really love to come back” as The Master

Doctor Who star Sacha Dhawan (the Master) talks about the “overwhelming” fan support for his turn as the iconic character, who will hopefully return:

Over the years, the Master has taken many forms. The most recent season of Doctor Who gave us yet another version of this iconic villain, now played by Sacha Dhawan, who reinvented the character once again as a nemesis for Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

If you’re like me and have trouble remembering the Master’s generations-long history, Dhawan breaks it down in the video below:

Dhawan’s Master made a big splash in 12, but we’re not sure if he’ll be back. Speaking to RadioTimes, Dhawan said he’s more than willing if the BBC is.

“There’s been no talk about me coming back,” he said. “I know they are planning another series and I’m waiting for that phone call. I would really love to come back. I’m just really excited to see, if I do come back, where they’d take the character. Y’know, the Master’s so unpredictable, he can get out of anything! I’m sure he’ll be inclined to make another visit. I hope!”

Given how many times the Master has shown up before, I have no doubt that we’ll see Dhawan’s Master again. Maybe not this upcoming season, but it will happen.

"If I do come back, I need to come back with a bigger bang. I don’t want to disappoint the fans. But I’ve got to wait for that phone call, so I’m not getting too stressed yet!"

Speaking of fans, most Whovians love Dhawan’s portrayal of the Master to the point where they put together the #SachaOurMaster campaign on Twitter in response to a tweet that questioned whether he, as a person of color, should play the character. Dhawan said he was “overwhelmed” by the support.

"There were certain people who had problems especially with an actor of colour playing the role – I got sent so many messages about that and I just ignored them. One day, I was just reading another tweet that I had been sent and Anjli [Mohindra, Dhawan’s partner] was saying to me that I should let people know the kind of messages that actors of colour can receive when they’re playing characters that people don’t agree that they should be playing… so I retweeted it. I didn’t realise the support I’d get… that people would be vocal about it and really get behind me, I was really moved by it."

We love Dhawan as the Master, and I, for one, really hope that Doctor Who brings him back in some capacity.
