Marvel boss Kevin Feige visited James Gunn on The Suicide Squad set

James Gunn is making both Marvel and DC movies, but Kevin Feige has his back. “There isn’t enmity behind-the-scenes like there is in the fan community.”
James Gunn is one of few directors well acquainted with both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. In 2014, he directed the hit Guardians of the Galaxy, and came back for Volume 2 in 2017. Then, after a series of inappropriate tweets he made years ago came back to light, Disney parted ways with him in what was widely seen as a bad move. Gunn went over to Warner Bros. to work on The Suicide Squad, but Disney eventually relented and welcomed him back into the fold, and he’s now working on Guardians Vol. 3 in addition to The Suicide Squad.
So Gunn is kind of a symbol of superhero unity, and it looks like Marvel boss Kevin Feige is here for it. In fact, not only does Gunn have Feige’s blessing, but the man himself — along with MCU producer Lou D’Esposito — even visited the set of The Suicide Squad.
“I told Kevin Feige before I took the job and he was very cool and supportive as he always is,” Gunn wrote on his Instagram. “He just wanted me to make a good movie. He and Lou D’Esposito even came to visit the set and watched us shoot. There isn’t enmity behind-the-scenes like there is in the fan community.”
Gunn also shared some behind-the-scenes pictures from the table read for the movie, although most of the cast looks pretty bored/absorbed in their work. I’m sure the actual movie will be more exciting.
This isn’t the first time Feige has showed his support for DC movies. Last year, he told MTV News that he’s “always supported” DC movies, and that he believed Gunn will take the Suicide Squad franchise to new heights. “I don’t see a rivalry,” he said. “I see cool films being made and one you thing you know about James Gunn, he makes cool films.”
I like the Feige’s thinking. Both studios are making blockbuster movies year after year, using some of the most iconic superheroes in comic history. There are exciting projects on both sides. There can be a friendly rivalry, sure, but there shouldn’t be bad blood.
The Suicide Squad is slated to open in movie theaters in August of2021.
