Game of Thrones still has the record for most Emmys won in a single year
By Dan Selcke
Schitt’s Creek won a TON of awards at tonight’s Emmy ceremony. Did it set a record for winning the MOST awards in one night? Not quite…
Schitt’s Creek has racked up a ton of Emmy awards at this year’s ceremony, the show’s 72nd. It’s scored some major awards, too, including Emmys for all four of its main cast members, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Comedy Series.
The awards came so fast and furious I’m sure some fans are wondering if the show is setting a record. Is this the most awards a single show has won in a year?
Well, Schitt’s Creek’s haul is definitely impressive, but no, there a few shows that have it beat.
The current record holder is Game of Thrones, which won a staggering 12 awards in both 2015 and 2016, for its fifth and sixth seasons respectively. That stretch included wins for Peter Dinklage for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, for Miguel Sapochnik for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series, and for Outstanding Drama Series, the top award of the night.
Incidentally, Game of Thrones also has the record for most awards won by a drama series at 59, and is tied with The West Wing, Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law for the most wins for Outstanding Drama Series, at four.
Congrats to Schitt’s Creek on its impressive haul!
