Henry Cavill auditioned to play James Bond way back when Daniel Craig got the role. With Craig’s time over, could things come back around?
Henry Cavill has been quite the busy bee over the last few years, between playing Superman, starring in a Mission: Impossible movie alongside Tom Cruise, and playing the title character in Netflix’s The Witcher. Oh, and let’s not forget his most recent stint as Sherlock Holmes on Netflix’s Enola Holmes. (Side note: Didn’t he make a great Sherlock?! Never thought I’d say that after Benedict Cumberbatch left his mark on the character, but here we are.)
The parts that he didn’t get are just as impressive. Fifteen years ago, Cavill auditioned to play James Bond in Casino Royale. Now that Daniel Craig’s run as the British superspy is coming to a close, everyone is wondering who will take over.
Outlander star Sam Heughan is a popular choice, with the actor himself saying that it’s about time for another Scottish actor to play the role. Game of Thrones star Richard Madden (Robb Stark) is another name that’s bubbled up a lot.
Personally, I’m Team Heughan, but I wouldn’t mind Cavill taking over the role either. In an interview with GQ, Cavill revealed he “would absolutely jump at the opportunity” to play James Bond. He does have experience in the spy world between Mission: Impossible and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., so he comes prepared.
"At this stage, it’s all up in the air. We’ll see what happens. But yes, I would love to play Bond, it would be very, very exciting. If Barbara [Broccoli] and [producer Michael G. Wilson] were interested in that, I would absolutely jump at the opportunity."
We’re all waiting on the edge of our seats to learn who will replace Craig, and I would be ecstatic to see Cavill or Heughan do it. Or better yet, what if they were both given roles in the new movies? James Bond has been around for a long time and the producers could always change up the formula.
