A Lord of the Rings reunion is happening on the next episode of The Boys
By Ariba Bhuvad
The next episode of The Boys will introduce us to Butcher’s father, and he’ll be played by one of Karl Urban’s old Lord of the Rings castmates.
The second season of The Boys has been a wildly entertaining ride, with lots of twists, turns, superhero satire and hyper-violence. The performances have been great, too, including from leading man Karl Urban, who plays Billy Butcher. And things are about to get taken up a notch with the addition of a very special guest star.
In this Friday’s new episode, “Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker,” Butcher is going to interact with his father. (Knowing how the son turned out, I’m afraid to discover what the dad is like.) The father will be played by none other than Urban’s Lord of the Rings co-star John Noble, who played the mad steward Denethor in Peter Jackson’s famous trilogy. Urban, meanwhile, played Éomer of the Rohirrim.
These two never interacted in The Lord of the Rings, but I’m still counting it as a reunion, and I simply cannot contain my enthusiasm over this unexpected surprise.
But how exactly will Butcher’s dad strut into his son’s life life? Well, his aunt did mention something about parents flying in, with Butcher reacting indifferently. There definitely seems to be some strain there. And if Butcher’s dad is an intimidating old man, we know that Noble can pull that role off really well; remember Fringe?
In the comics, Butcher’s dad isn’t the most pleasant guy, which explains a lot about Butcher. I have no idea what will go down in this week’s episode, but given Butcher’s storyline thus far, it’s going to get chaotic, emotional, and very angry.
Oh, and we’re going to meet Butcher’s mom as well, being played by Downton Abbey’s Lesley Nichol. Mrs. Patmore?! On The Boys?! Oh gosh, please don’t ruin the sweet, innocent image we have of her.
