Doctor Who’s “timey-wimey” catchphrase didn’t come from the Doctor

The Tenth Doctor was the first to utter the phrase “timey-wimey” to describe time travel, but where did HE hear it from? Let’s pull back the curtain, Doctor Who fans:

Doctor Who is filled with catchphrases, from “Allons-y” to “Geronimo.” One of the most memorable is “timey-wimey,” a phrase the Doctor uses the explain the absurd nature of time travel. Fans first heard the phrase during David Tennant’s run as the Tenth Doctor, in the classic episode “Blink”:

So that’s where we first heard it, but where did the Doctor first hear it?

The answer comes in Titan Comics’ miniseries about the Third Doctor, which dates back to September of 2016. Here, we learn that the Third Doctor (played by Jon Pertwee in the show) first heard the phrase from his companion Jo Grant. As she says it, the Doctor cuts her off and calls the phrase “ridiculous,” but clearly it stuck with him.

This is the beauty of a multi-decade franchise like Doctor Who; there’s so much history that it can always find new reveals somewhere, bending the series’ history back on itself until it stumbles across a new connection. We daresay there’s almost a “timey-wimey” quality to this revelation.
