Game of Thrones VFX company Pixomondo to open new virtual production studio this year

Virtual effects company Pixomondo responsible for lending its talent to Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian is set to open a new studio by the end of the year.
Pixomondo has contributed a lot to the likes of Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian when it comes to visual effects. And now, they are in the middle of constructing a new virtual production studio in Toronto, set to open by the end of the year.
For those that don’t know (because I didn’t either), virtual production essentially refers to visual effects that are done on set in real-time. This has been extremely handy during the coronavirus pandemic as productions have had to safely resume work on set. It cuts down the need to travel to actual locations, and offers the ability to socially distance and get work done.
I was quite blown away by the VFX work on Disney+’s The Mandalorian, specifically their VFX room known as The Volume. It’s a huge virtual set that transforms into any locale the production needs. To be honest, I had no idea it was a virtual production until I saw this behind-the-scenes video was and was blown away by the technology of it all.
You can’t even tell the difference between real and fake–that’s how amazing it is.
Pixomondo’s new virtual production studio will offer everything from equipment rental, to on-set staff, as well as services that allow for the creation of 3D environments. It’s a one-stop-shop for virtual production, folks!
This drastic change in technology has opened up many doors for productions of all kinds. Just think about it–they don’t have to travel to exotic locales if they don’t want to. Imagine the money they could be saving with just that alone. It’s truly a game-changer, and I’m excited to see what the future looks like as productions begin to steer more and more toward this new era.
