Outlander season 6 could be delayed until early 2022

With production not expected to begin until January 2021, Outlander season 6 could be delayed until 2022 — setting up an antagonizing Droughtlander.

If there is one thing Outlander fans have become accustomed to, its extended breaks between new seasons of the acclaimed Starz drama. While many shows manage to release new seasons within a few months apart or a year at most, the extended production time for Outlander has often led to longer breaks between the show’s seasons.

Following the season 5 finale on May 10, 2020, it was expected that Outlander season 6 would arrive sometime in early to late summer 2021; however, it’s beginning to look less likely that we’ll receive a season of Outlander in 2021.

Outlander season 6 filming schedule

Like many shows, Outlander has been forced to put its production plans on hold due to COVID-19 resulting in a delay for shooting the show’s sixth season. While the original hope seemed to be for the film to begin filming in May 2020; however, due to the unique circumstances 2020 has created, filming was delayed with a tentative plan to start production in fall 2020.

Unfortunately, it now appears that production has been delayed once again with the plan now being to start filming in early 2021.

As revealed by UK Casting News, filming on Outlander season 6 is now set to begin in Scotland in January 2021. This latest production change puts the show several months out from their original May 2020 start date and is likely to have an unfortunate effect on the release plans for season 6.

Outlander season 6 premiere date timeline

With filming on Outlander season 6 expected to begin in January, what exactly does this mean for the timeline of season 6’s premiere date?

As Den of Geek notes, a season of Outlander typically takes roughly eight to nine months to film and the season typically premieres on Starz three to four months after the conclusion of production.

Considering this timeline, should filming begin in January 2021 and run the standard eight-nine month window, production should be finished in August or September 2021. Depending on Starz’s plans, it is possible Outlander season 6 could premiere in the final month of 2021 it’s starting to look more likely that season 6 might be delayed until early 2022.

While there is a chance season 6 could premiere as early as late November or December (depending on how smoothly production on the season goes), it seems more likely Outlander season 6 will premiere in January 2022 after the holiday season.
