It’s official: Dune has been delayed well into 2021, meaning the rest of 2020 is pretty bare except for Wonder Woman 1984, and I don’t love its chances…
Well, we saw this coming: Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi story, has been bumped from its December 2020 release date. The new drop date: October 1, 2021.
Oof. That’s a long wait.
Obviously, his sucks royal, because the movie looks really good. Certainly, it looks like the best adaptation of Herbert’s hugely influential work yet. Have you seen the trailer?
This was all but inevitable after Wonder Woman 1984, which was originally going to come out much earlier this year, was given a new Christmas Day release date. Warner Bros. didn’t want to have two of its big tentpole films competing for box office draw, particularly with people still nervous about going back to the theater with the coronavirus going around. So Dune ended up getting the nudge, and honestly I wouldn’t be shocked if Wonder Woman got pushed back again.
This news comes on the heels of the announcement that No Time to Die, the newest James Bond film and the last with Daniel Craig in the lead role, has been bumped back from November of this year to April of the next. Will that be enough time for the U.S. and the world to get the coronavirus under control? Will there be a vaccine out by then? What about October? Unfortunately, there are no easy answers.
Just call 2020 the year without movies…except The New Mutants, for all the good it did.
