His Dark Materials writers are already laying out season 3

His Dark Materials returns soon for season 2, and the writers are already thinking about season 3…even though it the show hasn’t been renewed.

His Dark Materials was one of HBO’s most anticipated new series last fall, and fans are eager to return to this world of daemons and Dust when season 2 arrives this November. The show is one of the lucky ones to have been mostly finished with filming when the COVID-19 pandemic struck back in March. And with season 2 ready to roll, the creators’ minds are already on season 3 — even if the show hasn’t technically been renewed yet.

Speaking with Empire, His Dark Materials writer Jack Thorne touched on how Lyra’s journey will unfold in the coming seasons. And the implication certainly seems to be that there’s more than one on the way. “Series 1 was about Lyra looking for a path,” Thorne explained. “Now she needs to know what person she’s going to be on that path. And in Series 3, you see what she’s going to do with this path.”

It sounds like the creatives known how the show is going to unfold. Of course, it helps to have Philip Pullman’s book series to reference: season 1 adapted The Norther Lights and season 2 will adapt The Subtle Knife. And given that the original series is a trilogy ending with The Amber Spyglass, it makes sense there’d be a third season planned.

In addition to Thorne’s remarks, executive producer Jane Tranter tweeted earlier this year that work on the third season’s scripts was about to begin. Although there’s been no official update, season 3 is almost definitely a go.

Of course, fans will need to get through the new episodes this November first. With Lyra traveling to other worlds and crossing paths with Will, things are bound to ramp up by the season’s end — which means, when season 3 does get confirmed, the story should be ready to deliver a satisfying conclusion.
