Netflix assembles an impressive team of anime pros to make a new Godzilla show, with a Princess Mononoke/Spirited Away vet doing the kaiju designs.

Netflix has revealed they’ve given the green light for a new Godzilla anime series entitled Godzilla: Singular Point to appear on the platform in 2021.

The announcement comes following the success of previous Kaiju iterations like Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle and Godzilla: The Planet Eater. However, it’s understood that Singular Point will have no relation to its predecessors in terms of story.

Of that story we know relatively little, but we know the behind-the-scenes talent is pretty impressive. It includes a team-up between prestigious anime studios Bones (My Hero Academia) and Orange (Beastars, Land of the Lustrous) with direction from Atsushi Takahashi (Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi). Studio Ghibli alum Eiji Yamamori — whose credits include Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and The Wind Rises — will also be involved. He’ll be doing the all-important Kaiju design.

Finally, Japanese sci-fiction novelist Toh Enjoe will be handling writing duties, while Blue Exorcist creator Kazue Kato is the character designer. It all adds up to a tantalizing proposition, but like most tantalizing onscreen propositions, we’ll have to wait until 2021 to experience it. As of yet, there’s no specific release date, or even month, in mind, but hopefully that’ll change soon.

When it does, we’ll be sure to update you. What else have we got to do?
