After some hiccups (both corporate and pandemic-related), it looks like production is about to start on the next Spider-Man movie.
Spider-Man 3, the follow-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, almost didn’t happen, at least not with the involvement of Marvel Studios. For a brief and agonizing moment last year, it seemed like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man be booted out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Sony going it alone.
But worry not: Disney and Sony made nice, and Spider-Man 3 is moving forward as originally planned. And it looks like it could be starting production very, very soon.
This news comes to us from the ever-reliable sleuths at Reddit, one of whom spotted a sign for a movie code-named “Serenity Now” filming in Queens (Spider-Man’s home borough) in New York City starting October 16.
"Spider-Man 3 shooting in my hood later this week. from marvelstudios"
Now, we don’t know for sure if this is indeed Spider-Man 3, but the location has been used for the movies before, so it’s a pretty safe assumption.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, movie studios have had to do some major rescheduling, with lots of stuff getting delayed. Right now, Spider-Man 3 is set to release on Dec. 17, 2021, closing out a year that will now include Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals.
Assuming no further delays, 2021 might be Marvel’s biggest year yet. I guess that’s one way to kick off a brand new phase of the MCU, right?
Not to mention, Spider-Man 3 is bringing back Jamie Foxx as Electro, last seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’s unclear if this is the same version of the villain who faced off against Andrew Garfield’s web-slinger, if he’s being retconned, if there’s some multiple universe stuff going on, or what. There are many ways to play it.
One thing I know for sure is that the untitled Spider-Man 3 movie is gearing up to be one hell of a ride, since it will likely pick up from the “Peter Parker is Spider-Man” reveal from the end of Far From Home.
Hopefully, we’ll see another blast from the past in the form of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, the grouchy, relentless editor of The Daily Bugle now repurposed as a muckraking online pundit.
