Kate Mulgrew will return to the role of Captain Janeway — still the only female captain to head up a Trek show — for a new series: Star Trek: Prodigy.
I don’t think we’ve ever had more Star Trek on TV. There’s Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, the animated show Star Trek: Lower Decks, and several other series yet to come.
One of those is Star Trek: Prodigy, an upcoming CG-animated show about “a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.” This show is aimed more at kids, but more seasoned Trekkies will be interested to learn that Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway for seven seasons in Star Trek: Voyager, will be part of cast, back in her iconic role as the first (and to this day, the only) female Starfleet captain to head up a Trek show.
Mulgrew made the announcement on a Star Trek panel at this year’s (virtual) New York Comic-Con:
“ven as I was talking to Kurtzman on the phone, long-dormant longings to restore her started to stir,” Mulgrew said. “I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”
I think this is a fun idea, although I wonder how much nuance Janeway will have in a kids’ show. I also wonder if all these Star Trek shows are going to crowd each other out, but let’s take it one problem at a time.
Expect Star Trek: Prodigy to come out sometime in 2021, on Nickelodeon.
