The forces of good take a stand against the forces of evil The Stand, the new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic doorstop of a horror novel.

The Stand is a classic Stephen King novel about a plague that wipes out the great majority of the world’s population, with only the few who are immune surviving to try and build a new world. Is this the best story to be telling now, when the real world is racked by a virus that killed hundreds of thousands and put many more out of work? Maybe not, but CBS All Access already made it, and it looks pretty good, and they just released a new trailer, so maybe we should just roll with it:

Because this is a King story, it doesn’t stop at just the plague. After the world is devastated, a malevolent, supernatural figure who goes by the name Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård) rises from the ashes to try and establish a new dominion of evil on Earth. Opposing him is Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg), who gathers to her various wayward souls in her enclave in Boulder, Colorado. Flagg gathers his own followers in Las Vegas, which is where any self-respecting demon-spawn would go, and the two communities soon come into conflict.

One of the big draws here is the cast. In addition to Goldberg and Skarsgård, the miniseries also boasts James Marsden (Stu Redman), Amber Heard (Nadine Cross), Henry Zaga (Nick Andros), Heather Graham (Rita Blakemoor), Greg Kinnear (Glen Bateman) and many more.

Also note that this is indeed a miniseries, not an ongoing show; CBS is making 10 episodes and then it’s out. The poster is pretty neat, too:

There’s also an extended ending written by King himself.

The Stand premieres on CBS All Access (soon to be Paramount+) on December 17. And as long as we’re talking about trailers, BBC America has released one for The Watch, its very loose adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s books.

The Watch is coming out in January 2021.
