Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth join Mad Max: Fury Road prequel

Mad Max: Fury Road is the best action movie of the 2010s. Now, the prequel is staffing up and moving forward, probably at 100 mph through a desert wasteland.

Mad Max: Fury Road came out in 2015, and I haven’t really stopped thinking about it since. Director George Miller returned to his Mad Max series after 30 years away, and sometimes it was more exciting than it had ever been, picking up with Max (Tom Hardy) dealing with a new tyrannical villain deep in the desert wasteland, with help from the despot’s turncloak captain Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron).

In fact, Furiosa is basically the main character of the movie, and the one fans were most eager to see more of after the credits rolled. Now, Miller is finally giving it to us in the form of a prequel that will show us Furiosa’s origin story, long before she teamed up with Max Rockatansky.

Unfortunately, since Furiosa will be a good deal younger, Theron won’t be returning to the role. However, Deadline reports that Anya Taylor-Joy (EmmaThe New Mutants) will be stepping into her shoes, joined by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Doctor Manhattan in HBO’s Watchmen show) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor in the MCU).

After Fury Road, I’ll watch pretty much anything in that world Miller chooses to do, especially when, as here, he’s working with a lot of the same behind-the-scenes talent who helped make the first movie. I’m a little bummed that we’re getting a prequel rather than a sequel, but given the sky-high quality of Fury Road, Miller has more than earned the benefit of the doubt.

I mean, I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie more than once in the theater. It’s that good. There’s no release date for the prequel yet, but I’ll be here whenever it arrives.
