Take a look at the [REDACTED] armor from Amazon’s The Wheel of Time show
By Corey Smith
A leaked armor image from The Wheel of Time set has us pondering just who we might be looking at, and who’s sigil they’re wearing.
Amazon is currently adapting Robert Jordan’s 14-novel epic The Wheel of Time for the small screen, and it could be the next big fantasy series. With filming recently having resumed after a COVID-19 break, we’re getting more leaked photos from the set.
And where there are leaks, that means potential SPOILERS. You have been warned.
Alright, still here? Here’s the pic:
At first glance, we’re looking at some pretty standard medieval-style armor here. However, allow me to draw your attention to the sigils at the bottom:
It looks like some kind of bird in flight on a field of yellow. True, just about everyone puts a bird of some sort on their banners in Randland, but this still gives us a clue or two about who we’re looking at.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d guess that this was the golden crane of House Malkier, of which our boy Lan Mandragoran, warder to Moiraine Sedai, is the last known member. House Malkier was obliterated along with the country and swallowed by the Blight long before the events of The Eye of the World, the first book in the series.
More likely, we’re looking at soldiers from Shienar, a nation that lies at the edge of the Blight. Shienar’s sigil is a swooping black hawk, although in Jordan’s novels it appears on a blue-and-white striped pattern, not the yellow one we see here. Still, we know our heroes will travel to Shienar in season 1, so this seems like the best fit.
Outside possibilities include House Ingtar, a minor house in Shienar, which features a grey owl — the bird on the uniform appears too slim to be an owl. It could also be Artur Hawkwing’s golden hawk in flight, although Hawkwing’s banner hasn’t been seen for even longer than House Malkier’s. We could potentially be looking at the sigil of the Seanchan, a golden hawk clutching three lightning bolts, but the armor and helmets don’t look like something they would wear.
We might not know for sure until season 1 debuts sometime in 2021, but the image does give us a good sense of the level of production we should expect. Like the Whitecloak armor we’ve previously seen, time and detail have been devoted to these costumes, a good sign for any Wheel of Time fan.
