Stargirl creator teases new villains for season 2: The Shade and Eclipso

Stargirl is the newest addition to the CWverse (aka the Arrowverse, which I’ll keep calling it until someone stops me), and it’s just getting started:

Stargirl had a pretty solid first season, and fans definitely want more. I’m pumped that the show is living to see another day, and I’m even more pumped after the NYCC panel this past weekend.

Creator Geoff Johns teased the introduction of two new villains for the second season: the Shade and Eclipso. For those who don’t know too much about either of these villains, don’t worry: I’ve got you.

In the DC comics, the Shade is primarily an enemy of the Flash and the Justice Society, as well as Starman. We got a brief “glimpse” of him in the Stargirl season 1 finale, after the Injustice Society fails to execute Project New America. He has an ominous vibe, which bodes well for season 2.

"We’re going to see a lot of The Shade. That’s another big character that’s going to be coming into season 2. He’s a pretty famous and popular character from James Robinson’s run on Starman. [Robinson] took this really obscure character from the ’40s who has this ability to tap into darkness and shadows, and updated him, gave him a massive history that’s really fun to explore.[…] He’s an immortal who’s been around for hundreds of years. He’s a member of the ISA, and he’s in that mural behind Sportsmaster and Huntress, [as] we saw his glasses kind of behind her. However, beyond this, he’s the only member of the ISA that wasn’t present in Blue Valley during the events that transpired."

As for Eclipso, his essence is currently embedded within a diamond. At the moment, that diamond is in the hands of Cindy (Meg DeLacy), which can’t be good.

"[He] is such a different darker, and more scary threat, albeit with its own share of occasional lightness. The threat is Cindy’s black diamond and we’re gonna obviously explore that… But this entity that’s trapped inside it, this ancient being that feeds off humanity’s own sins and grief and fear and darkness, is trapped in this black diamond and has been there a long, long time and is aching to do what he does and feed off the darkness within humanity. It’s going to take a lot to confront it. It’s going to take the JSA to a place that’s going to be tough for them to explore."

Stargirl season 2 sounds like it’s going to be jam-packed with evil, mystery, and more epic battles. But there’s one lingering question we want answered above them all: is Starman, aka Sylvester Pemberton (Joel McHale) really back?

Johns wasn’t willing to share anything on that front, but he did say that we’ll learn more about whatever is going on there starting with the first episode of the new season. I’d love to see Joel McHale have a larger role, so here’s hoping that he’ll stick around for a while.

Next. See Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle on the set of The Batman. dark
